RPI 8: Create in Reading

Today was a fun and interesting day focussing on Create Tasks. I feel like my students' digital skills are really coming along now and I’m excited to allow them more choice in their create tasks and tools.

AI tools are something I’ve been thinking and researching about lately and the importance of our students being able to use these not only for learning tasks at school but also to allow them the opportunity to understand how others are using them. I think it’s essential for our learners to understand these tools more because they need to be able to look at things with a critical lens more now than ever before (e.g. AI to generate photos of themselves doing something that isn’t or hasn’t actually happened). And what better way to do that than to get them using them!

Creating the One Shot Film was tricky and I cheated using three separate clips. I felt really nervous and had so many takes so this is something I need to keep working on to develop confidence.

I really enjoyed the task though and will definitely use it in my class as I think the students will enjoy making these. I'm pretty sure my learners will find it easy as they’re in front of a camera via Tik Tok etc a lot.

Lately my students have been creating dioramas in response to stories related to our ‘Big Bad Wolf’ themed literacy unit. I’m keen to turn this into a google site so I can share it with others and also re-use it easily in the future. My students have absolutely loved being hands-on with their creations. Their next step is to record themselves explaining their diorama to others. I’m also going to capture recordings of students giving their impressions of what they think other students' dioramas are about. This will be used as a reflection tool for each creator so they can see how the audience interprets their creation.

  1. Kia Ora Dani,
Unfortunately I can not play the video, I was looking forward to seeing your master piece. Your Te Marama image is beautiful and I am sure the students will love creating these themselves. I agree with you on the AI tools and am looking forward to exploring these more myself as they are evolving and producing some amazing apps. I will keep an eye out for your students blog post about their dioramas.

  2. Hi Dani, Great to hear about the create tasks your students are already doing, and I love the idea of recording them as a reflection. AI is going to be very interesting to see how we can be using this in the classrooms, I know I bookmarked a few of them that Dorothy mentioned to explore in the holidays. With more and more social media being in a video format I think our learners will be well set up with the short create task of the one shot film. Kiri
