RPI 2: Know your learners as readers
What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme?
Reading programme design should be based on both formal and informal data e.g. surveys to gather reader profiles, PAT assessments.
Encouraging learners to use technology to turbocharge their learning (e.g. podcasts, recording themselves and opinions) and posting this onto their blogs for others to see can be a great motivator and chance for them to engage with an authentic audience.
What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?
The amazing data collection and planning tool will be a massive help to inform the types of things I should be using to inform my practice and student's needs. I really like how it's your one stop shop to be able to collect and analyse data to then use it to plan rich learning content that students need to learn.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Careful and clear construction of learning intentions and success criteria will be key to ensure my students know what their focus is and how they can prove they have met the expectations.
Selecting text types from reader profiles will be good to use in the coming week to show students that the collected data is being considered to enhance their enjoyment of guided texts. I will also use this to inform lessons during our visits to the school library.
I also like the digital modelling book example. This is a good way to record evidence during group sessions that can be looked back on.
What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga?
I am definitely going to share the teacher workbook with our staff. I love that it is across all ages and that it can be adapted to suit the assessment tools our school uses. Whoever developed the workbook is a very clever person and I am very grateful to have access to this!

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting your reflection from Day Two of the RPI.
I look forward to hearing how your children respond to you selecting texts that they have indicated from the Interest Survey. What a great way to engage learners in reading!
Yes, I have to agree with you about the Teachers Workbook. Such a great tool to be able to have all your data, planning and information in one place! Will you use it with all your groups or just start off with one?
Have a great week,
Anna
