RPI 1. Reading is Core to Learning

What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme?

That in order for students to fully engage in reading that is sustainable and encourages good reading habits, we need to know what sparks their interest and what their current reading habits are already. This will enable us to identify areas where we need to focus on in our programme to foster students reading habits. I am keen to build on students efficacy and beliefs about reading to promote life long readers.

What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading?

Today was a good reminder that I need to be a good role model for reading habits. I'm going to make sure I prioritise reading allowed to my students to build their enjoyment of novels and I am also excited to see what the reading survey shows and how I can use this data to adapt my reading programme to target student interests more. I have also got some fresh ideas for what I could do to give students more choice in either texts or activities.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

The data from the survey will be good to analyse with students and allow them to share their opinions about what we need to work on together. I am also going to adapt the reading challenge for reading homework for my learners and brainstorm some incentives for completing reading homework.

What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga?

I will be writing a homework letter encouraging parents to support their children to complete the reading challenges and also encourage them to make frequent trips to the library.

Overall thoughts:
I enjoyed the course today and was inspired by a lot of the content. I can't wait to give a lot of this a try over the next few weeks. I can't wait to learn more about pedagogical approaches that accelerate high quality readers.

It was lovely to meet you at the RPI Day 1. I really appreciated your contributions during our breakouts and I look forward to hearing how the last few weeks of school has been once we meet back fro Day 2.

Yes, it is so important that we are reading role-models to our students. Have you started reading aloud to your students yet? My learners have decided on the novel but I am yet to begin! I know how much they enjoy this time - I just need to better at making it happen.

I have enjoyed learning about the different texts and authors that my students (Yr5&6) like reading. It is affirming to know that by just knowing this knowledge can help us to foster a love of reading in our students and help them to grow in self-efficacy.

I look forward to hearing how you have gone by encouraging whānau to take their child/children to the library.
